The human presence in the municipality of Tíjola dates back to prehistoric times, with remains from the Neolithic period, there is also a Megalithic site and Roman presence in Tagili (Tíjola) as well as Roman villas in the surrounding area.
Religious fervour is evident in this municipality, within a few metres you can admire the Parish Church of Santa Maria (XVII Century), the Hermitage of the Virgen del Socorro, the Hermitage of San Cayetano (1571) where the image of the Virgin of Fatima is found and which is carried in procession on the 13th of May through the colourful and sawdust carpeted streets, the Hermitage of San Sebastian (1578) and the Hermitage of Las Animas (VXI Century).
A highlight of the town is the Balsa de Cela, a thermal spring located 3.5 km north of Tíjola, on the border with the municipality of Lúcar, and at an altitude of 720 metres above sea level. The waters emerge naturally with a constant flow of 42 litres per second and a temperature that is maintained at different times of the year between 22 and 24 degrees centigrade.
