Bacares is the highest village in the Sierra de los Filabres, at an altitude of 1201 metres. It is dedicated to the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and livestock. The modern history of Bacares is closely linked to the conquest of the town, an important Muslim enclave, by the Catholic Monarchs. Centuries later, it is the mining industry that underlines the development of this town.
The most interesting architectural elements of this town are the ruins of the ancient Castle of Bacares, probably of Roman origin, and the Parish Church (1502).
Every 14th September, Bacares welcomes thousands of pilgrims, who show their devotion to the Santo Cristo del Bosque. Legend has it that this image appeared in a place far from the town, in the middle of the forest.
