Bacares is the second highest town in the province of Almería, exceeding 1200 meters of altitude. Nestled between several mountains that exceed 2000m, it is a beautiful place for a getaway and get away from noise and everyday life. Peace, nature and above all good gastronomy is what you will find if you decide to spend one or several days in this beautiful town.
We are going to suggest several things that you cannot miss on your visit. Throughout the town you will find figures that represent the customs of the municipality as an ethnographic museum. The public laundry was once an important place, located in the middle of the town, it was the meeting point for women where local events were reported. Then you have to look for the castle (ruins) refurbished as a viewpoint, with beautiful views and an exciting history. The Church of Santa María is a mandatory stop, built in 1502 and with a Mudejar-style coffered ceiling. Visit the hermitage where thousands of pilgrims come every year in mid-September and take Santo Cristo de Bacares in procession.
The surroundings of the town are spectacular: La Tetica de Bacares, a 2000m high peak with incredible views. The Calar Alto astronomical observatory, the most important in Continental Europe. Two beautiful trails PR-A 14 (Bacares-Sierro) and PR-A 362 (Bacares-El Carrascal), the latter passes next to the Bacares River that hides an impressive landscape, especially in spring.
Finally and for some the most important, the gastronomy. Take a tour of the town to buy homemade sausages, bread or handmade biscuits in the bakery, the famous Pastissfay cakes made in the town and stop for lunch at Bar los Arcos or at Restaurante Las Fuentes, even if you don’t forget to book in case you run out of room.
If you plan to spend several days (it’s ideal) and stay the night, you have two great options: Hotel Las Fuentes and Apartamentos Rural Ecofilabres.
