The Molino Harinero del Lugar is a restored 19th century building with a lot of history that was in operation until the 1960’s and was one of the most important in Andalucia in its time due to its 4 millstones and one of the first to use steam as a driving force.
HISTORY
In the 16th century, a flour mill was built on the same site with a hydraulic system, i.e. based on a water system that moved large paddle wheels under the floor. The tunnels and irrigation channels that reached the mill, passed underneath it to move the paddles and evacuated the water through another tunnel still remain from this period.
In the 19th century, the steam engine was installed as a driving force that basically worked with coal and wood. From 1923 onwards, the steam engine was replaced by an electric motor which was in service until 1967, when the mill ceased to operate as water shortages led to the replacement of grain crops with citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. The mill closed due to the lack of grain.
