Route “Knowing Zurgena and Arboleas”

Come and learn about the history of Zurgena, a tour of its streets and stately homes. Visit the Church with its wooden coffered ceiling, the Clock Tower and the restored railway station. Then we will do a tasting of homemade sausages.

In the afternoon we will get to know Arboleas, visiting its impressive Church, the 12th century tower and we will discover the Nasrid doctor Al-Arbuli. We will end the visit at the Pedro Gilabert Museum dedicated to this great naive artist from Arboleas.

Description of the experience

We begin through the streets of Zurgena, observing the numerous stately homes, arriving at the Church of San Ramón Nonato, with a wooden coffered ceiling and an image of “Virgen de los Dolores” belonging to Jesús de Perceval. We will reach the Clock Tower (1882). We will go down to the “Gines Parra” park dedicated to the famous local painter, a great friend of Pablo Picasso. Opposite we can see the Molino del Lugar, from 1863, with its large chimney.

We headed to the other side of the Almanzora River, to Alfoquía, a nucleus that developed mainly after the arrival of the Railroad in 1885. It was one of the most important stations in the area. The buildings were rehabilitated respecting their original structure and today we can walk through this station as if it were an open-air museum.

Then we will have a tasting of homemade sausages in a local butcher shop.

In the afternoon, we will travel to the neighboring town of Arboleas. We will visit the Parish Church of Santiago, also the Arboleas Tower from the 12th century, from where we will have magnificent views. We will visit the sculpture of Al-Arbulí, made of white marble 2 meters high by the sculptor Luis Ramos. Work sculpted in honor of a doctor and lawyer from the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, who wrote the book “Treatise on Food”.

And finally, we will visit the Pedro Gilabert Museum, dedicated to this Naif artist born here, who knew how to give life to olive wood. The permanent collection is made up of 142 carved sculptures, which deal with religious, sexual, adventurous themes, etc…
