If you are looking for a different destination full of history, culture and fun, you can’t miss Cantoria, a village in the province of Almería that every year celebrates one of the unique and spectacular festivals in Andalusia: the Carretillas de San Antón.

The Carretillas of San Antón

This event is held on the night of 16 January as a prelude to the feast of San Antonio Abad, patron saint of the town. During the celebration, pyrotechnic cartridges filled with gunpowder and iron filings are lit, called carretillas, which release a stream of incandescent sparks. The carretilleros dare to throw them and run among them, creating a spectacle of light and sound that illuminates the streets of the village.

It is believed that this festival arose as a complement to the Moors and Christians celebrations typical of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It is also related to the old silk and gunpowder industry that existed in the Almanzora valley and which chose San Antonio Abad as its patron saint. Whatever the case, the fact is that this tradition has been kept alive for centuries and has become a symbol of identity and pride for the Cantorians.
