OUR ROAD

The Natural Path Vía Verde del Almanzora Tramo del Hierro, is an old disused route of the Guadix-Almendricos railway that dates back to 1894, as it passes through the municipality of Serón, nowadays a non-motorized itinerary to be traveled on foot or in bicycle. The Green Route of the Iron constitutes an attractive and sustainable means for visitors to enjoy our natural space, facilitating the practice of an active and healthy leisure and favoring the recovery of an important part of our heritage, a vestige of mining activity. La Vía has a route of 11.8 km with a minimum slope, in which we find three old abandoned iron ore loading bays, hence the road is called the Iron Section, since they transported the ore between exploitations by means of a dense network of aerial cables and they took it to the railroad in Serón. We also find old railway stations rehabilitated for the installation of complementary services, such as restaurant, exhibition and concert hall, and bicycle rental. Our Green Way, besides the possibility of walking, pedaling or horseback riding, offers us other recreational and leisure alternatives, through the organization of itineraries, educational, environmental, artistic, sports activities and knowledge of the environment.

ROUTE FOR HEALTHY LIFE

The Routes for Healthy Life project is an initiative of the Ministry of Health to promote recognition of the routes that citizens use to perform physical activity (mainly walking) as a municipal resource for health promotion. Several local Andalusian corporations, among them Serón, participate in this project, which consists in disseminating through information posters and other means the characteristics of these routes, such as distance of travel, recommended time to do it and estimated caloric expenditure. This information allows:
– That people who use the routes know better the amount of physical exercise they do, and how to schedule this activity.
– That the professionals of the health centers can “prescribe” with greater precision the practice of exercise to their patients, when developing the Dietetic Council.
– That the Town Halls offer a resource for the promotion of health and prevention to the residents of the municipality, and a range of services for the people who visit them, who are increasingly looking for more active tourism.

HISTORY

The railway line that crossed Seron’s municipal area was inaugurated in 1894, the Purchena-Serón section was inaugurated on September 10, and the Serón-Baza section on December 11. At the end of the 19th century, the iron ore reserves of the Sierra de los Filabres, in Serón and Bacares, began to be exploited. This meant a radical change for the railway, since in a short time it went from being a line of markedly local character to becoming an active railway essentially industrial, specialized in the transport of iron ore, being necessary the extension carried out in the Station of Serón and the construction of the loaders of Los Canos, La Estación and the Treasurer.

In 1905 the mines of Serón and Bacares reach a great height, reason why it was two years later when the railroad achieved its maximum prominence. Mineral traffic continued to be carried out, although the extractive activity was disappearing in part of the reserves that previously used the railway. The last loading of minerals that served was that of Los Canos, which stopped operating in 1969. Years before, the loading stations of La Estación and Tesorero had stopped.

The last train traveled through the Almanzora Valley in 1984. Once verified that the cost of maintaining the Guadix-Almendricos line was deficient, and despite popular protests, it was closed to traffic.
