You’ve been to Olula, but you haven’t seen it from its viewpoints. Why don’t you join me one day as we wander through its streets, and I’ll show you four viewpoints that hardly anyone knows about.
The viewpoint on Calle Álvarez de Sotomayor
It’s situated above the sandstone quarry from which the Church of San Sebastián was built in the 18th century. From there you can see the River Almanzora and it is one of the best spots for viewing the marble quarries of Purchena. To get there, you should set off from the New Church (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) towards the Civil Guard barracks; walk past them and continue uphill until Villaespesa Street ends.

Viewpoint on Calle Real
It is very close to the Barrio Santiago chapel, a 5-minute walk from San Pablo Park. From here, you can see the two Huitar hills (Huitar Menor and Huitar Mayor), where the Guerrero plain is located, along with a quarry whose deposits date back to the Tertiary period. It is a prime spot for viewing the Cerrá de Olula and the Sierra de Olula.

El Pinatar Viewpoint
You can see the coast of Vera, the quarries of Cóbdar, those of Macael, those of Laroya and the Tetica de Bacares. It is 8 km from the Ibáñez Museum, 2.5 km of which is a dirt track passing through a pine forest that I recommend you walk along.

Viewpoint from a house on Callejón Hondo
From here you can see the village’s landmark: the ‘Piedra Ver de Olula’. To find this viewpoint, I recommend setting off from the Old Church, passing by the Town Hall, and heading towards the Old Barracks. It is in the old town, near where the Chocolate Factory used to be. The factory was established in the late 1800s, at a time when there were only two factories in the whole province (one in Almería city and the other in Olula del Río), and from here the chocolate was distributed throughout the Almanzora region.

In addition, there are three spectacular viewpoints in the neighbouring villages from which Olula can be seen from a unique perspective:
The Nuestra Señora del Rosario Viewpoint (Macael): Situated atop a medieval tower, it offers direct views of Olula Castle, which stands on the Piedra Ver.
The Rosa Galera Viewpoint (Fines): From here, the unique view of the Clock Tower of the Church of San Sebastián stands out.
The La Cerrá Viewpoint (Urrácal): From here, you can see Olula as if you were floating in a hot-air balloon.
